Food Allergy Treatment Options:
TIP, OIT, & Avoidance
Whether your child has been recently diagnosed with a severe food allergy or you’ve been coping with the daily challenges for many years, you are not alone. Explore this page to learn about three popular options and discover why our patients chose TIP.
Treatment Options
TIP
TIP introduces foods similar in molecular structure to a patient's allergen to build tolerance before ever exposing the body directly to an allergen. Upon completing the program, it provides individuals with long-term immune tolerance, allowing them to consume their allergens without restriction or reaction.
OIT
Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) is a treatment approach for food allergies that involves gradually exposing the patient to small, controlled amounts of their allergen, to desensitize the immune system and protect from accidental exposure.
Avoidance
Avoidance is a food allergy management strategy that involves preventing exposure to allergens altogether. This strategy is critical for individuals who have not graduated from the Tolerance Induction Program, especially those at risk of life-threatening allergic reactions.
Treatment Comparison
TIP
Complete Remission0 /month
- Life without stress and fears
- Experience total food freedom
- Only available at FAI
OIT
Minimize Severity0 /month
- Results & Processes Vary by Practice
- Only Treat 1 Allergen at a Time
- Doesn't Achieve Full Remission
Avoidance
Highest Risk0 /month
- Requires Lifelong Avoidance
- Accidental Exposure Can Be Fatal

Tolerance Induction Program™ (TIP)
Outcomes
The Tolerance Induction Program™ (TIP) enables patients to achieve "Food Freedom" or lasting clinical remission. By the end of treatment, patients consume their allergens in ANY amount without restriction as a non-allergic person would.
Approach
TIP uses safe, non-allergenic food proteins similar in molecular structure to an allergen to gradually retrain the immune system and safely develop tolerance before ever introducing a patient to their allergen.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Treatment Age: 18 mos.- 25 yrs. old
- In-person appointments at Food Allergy Institute's Southern California centers are required 4-6 times per year.
- The average treatment duration is 2.5 - 4 years.
LifeStyle Impact
Reduced/Eliminated Allergy Anxiety
Unrestricted Eating
Experience "Normalcy" of life without food allergies
Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)
Outcomes
Approach
OIT exposes patients directly to foods they are allergic to in increasing amounts to achieve desensitization.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Varies from practice to practice
- Many practices do not accept severe or complex cases
- Typically weekly office visits are required
- Treatment duration may range from 6 months to 3 years.
*OIT varies from practice to practice, as do requirements, results, safety, and treatment protocols.
LifeStyle Impact
Reduced anxiety around accidental exposure
Less isolation, but still calls for avoidance
Avoidance
Outcomes
Avoidance can have varying success as a food allergy management method. It can be an unsustainable approach for those with multiple or severe food allergies.
Approach
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Constant vigilance, research, and dedication
- Often requires avoiding social events and public spaces
LifeStyle Impact
High anxiety, social isolation, and exhaustion

How TIP Works?
TIP uses highly customized plans, supervised in-office visits, and regulated at-home dosing to help patients achieve food freedom with a 99% success rate. Regardless of pre-existing conditions or the number of food allergies a patient has, TIP can help. TIP is available to patients from 18 months to 25 years of age.
Through the Tolerance Induction Program, patients will never begin by introducing their anaphylactic allergens but instead build tolerance through dosing biosimilar proteins. Biosimilar proteins are safe, non-allergic foods similar in molecular structure to a patient’s allergens.
The treatment program works through four phases: Pre-treatment, Conditioning, Induction, and Remission.
The Tolerance Induction Program offers a breakthrough solution for patients deemed untreatable by traditional medical practices, providing new hope and innovative care where others have failed.
The TIP Difference
Each patient’s unique data directly drives their specific treatment journey. With our proprietary data analysis software and advanced diagnostic testing, we can accurately diagnose and predict the optimal treatment plan down to the milligrams of food proteins administered.
Brennan was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy when he was 15 months old. We tried oral immunotherapy (OIT) when he was 4 and it didn’t go well. Through the extensive testing at the beginning of the Tolerance Induction Program, we discovered an unknown hazelnut allergy as well as foods that needed to be avoided while we introduced peanut and hazelnut. It has been a completely different experience than OIT and as a result, Brennan successfully challenged a whole peanut!
Stacey, TIP Mom
Roselee has been allergic to dairy since she was an infant. We had been through OIT and she was able to eat baked dairy and withstand accidental consumption of peanut. But, it was a hard process that resulted in so many reactions my husband once asked me to quit and very daunting eating the same quality daily for 3 years past graduation. We discovered TIP and was able to reach food freedom for dairy in little over a year near graduation. It's been life changing.

Through the Tolerance Induction Program, patients never begin by introducing their anaphylactic allergens but instead, build tolerance through dosing similar food proteins. These similar proteins are safe, non-allergic foods similar in molecular structure to a patient’s allergens.
